Video about LGBT in Russia watched in 73 countries

08.05.2015

"We can break the silence" was the key message of the video by "Coming Out", launched on the International Day of Silence on 17th April 2015.  During the 4 days it was viewed by 5000  internet users from 73 countries, with the majority of the audience being in Russia. The video explores the idea of openness and fragility, and the power of love against the backdrop of violence and hatred. The director used the footage of LGBT rallies in Russia, and the public hearings of the so-called "propaganda law," held at the Legislative Assembly of Saint Petersburg, as well as studio footage of activists who volunteered to take part in the video.

Kseniya Khrabryh, director: "Corporeality, sensuality, sexuality, creative energy are often irrational and chaotic. That is why they seem so strange to those in power, who want to have control over people. That is why there is an urge to limit it, to suppress it, to make it controllable. But these things are like flowers, fragile and strong enough to grow through the cement of violence and suppression".

Tabby, project participant: "I am in this video because I wanted to change the situation in our country, people's views on what is silenced and who is silenced. I did it not only to resist discrimination and violence, but also to awaken something quite ordinary, namely, humane and tolerant attitude towards us".

Elena M, project participant: "I was strongly convinced that I had to to participate. I feel greatly inspired and empowered when a group of people wants to make a statement in a creative form. It restores my faith in Humanity".

The Day of Silence is the annual day of action to draw people's attention towards the problem of silencing of discrimination and violence against the LGBT communities. This problem is especially relevant for Russia due to the 2013 'propaganda' law. Every day, thousands of people in Russia suffer from  discrimination, bullying and harassment just because they differ from others.
