COMING OUT'S STATEMENT ABOUT BAN OF PRIDE
LGBT organization Coming Out strongly condemns the refusal of the St. Petersburg administration to permit Gay Pride organizers to hold the rally and march, as previously scheduled.
St. Petersburg authorities have grossly violated the law by canceling the previously issued permit for the march and rally of St. Petersburg Gay Pride. Smolny took upon itself to decide whether the action would constitute an offense under the "propaganda of homosexuality" law before it actually happened. Based on this assumption, the permit was revoked. No such grounds for revocation exist in the law of Russian Federation. Furthermore, just over a month ago, the court of St. Petersburg pointed out to the city administration that street actions cannot be banned preventively on the grounds of the new administrative "propaganda" law. The court declared unlawful the refusal of the Administration of the Central district to permit street demonstrations for Day of Silence (April 7) and International Day against Homophobia (May 17) on the basis of "gay propaganda" law.
